Social Security

Summary

Summary

This lesson showed how to use the worksheet in Publication 915, Social Security and Equivalent Railroad Retirement Benefits, to calculate the taxable portion of Social Security benefits for Puerto Rico residents with exempt Puerto Rican source income.

The worksheet compares taxpayers':

  • Base amount (according to filing status: Single $25,000; Married Filing Jointly or Head of Household $32,000; Married Filing Separately and lived with spouse at any time $0), and
  • Total of their income (including income from exempt sources) and half their Social Security benefits

Taxpayers whose total is more than their base amount may have to pay taxes on part of their Social Security benefits.
