How Would You Respond?

Zheng:

My wife and I both teach at the university, but I have been teaching longer than my wife has. I'm not sure what our residency status will be for the 2023 tax year.

You:

I can help you with that. First, tell me when you arrived to begin working at the university?

Zheng:

I came to the U.S. for the first time on a visa to teach for two years in the fall of 2021. My contract was extended for another two years in 2023, to go through 2025.

You:

And when did your wife come to the U.S?

Zheng:

My wife and our child came with me in 2021, but she didn't start work at the university until November 2023.

You:

Okay, so you and your family were here over two years?

Zheng:

That's right. Can you tell me if my wife would be considered a resident?
