Quality Review of the Tax Return

Signing Form 1040

Signing an e-File Return

Self-Select PIN

To be eligible to use a Self-Select PIN, taxpayers must have a copy of their previous year's tax return so the volunteer can enter their adjusted gross income (AGI) for the previous tax year into the software. Taxpayers may elect to use their prior year PIN for authentication in lieu of their prior year AGI.

If you are electronically filing a return and attachments are required, use Form 8453, U.S. Individual Income Tax Transmittal for an IRS e-file return, to transmit the supporting paper documents to the IRS. Examples of supporting paper documents that could be required are:

  • Form 2848, Power of Attorney
  • Form 8332, Release/Revocation of Release of Claim to Exemption for Child by Custodial Parent (or similar statement)

For Married Filing Jointly taxpayers, both spouses must be present if they choose the Self-Select PIN method.

Caution

The Self-Select PIN method requires that taxpayers bring in their previous year's return.
