Instead, the entire refund will be sent to the taxpayer in the form of a check. If an error is made on the return and the amount of the refund is increased, the additional amount will be sent to the taxpayer in the form of a check. The first step is to check the status of the refund by going to the "Where's My Refund" feature on www.irs.gov, or calling 1-800-829-1954. Taxpayers can generally get information about their refund 72 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt of their e-filed return, or three to four weeks after mailing a return. Once the IRS has processed the refund and placed the order for savings bonds, the taxpayer would contact the Treasury Retail Securities office at 1-800-245-2804 to inquire about the status of the savings bonds.
