Calculating the Credit

Amount of the Credit

The actual amount of the child tax credit is figured using worksheets, but you must determine which worksheet to use for each taxpayer. Review steps 6 and 7 in the Child Tax Credit Interview Tips in the Volunteer Resource Guide (Tab G).

Tax software hint.

Tax software will automatically calculate the credit, provided you have correctly completed the:

  • Dependent section of the Main Information Screen
  • Taxpayer's return through the retirement savings contribution credit line
  • Part I of Form 5695, and Schedule R
