2008 AMT Assistant

Welcome to the 2008 AMT Assistant

In order to determine whether you may be required to pay the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT), we will ask you a series of questions.

  • Most people using the 2008 AMT Assistant can complete the AMT worksheet using this tool in 5-10 minutes.

Before You Start

  • If this return is for a child under 24, special rules apply; see the "Caution" that appears at the end of the line 45 instructions on page 40 of the 2008 Form 1040 Instructions to see if you can use the 2008 AMT Assistant, or if you must fill out Form 6251, to find out if you are required to pay the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT).
  • Have your draft 2008 Form 1040 available, completed through Line 44. You will be entering information from the 1040 and Schedule A (if used).

    • If you are claiming the foreign tax credit, you should complete Form 1040, line 47, because you may also be asked for information from that line.

Remember the answer you get is only as accurate as the data you enter!
